Sustainable Montour Falls

As the Chair of the Montour Falls Sustainability Committee, I have the honor and responsibility of leading our Village through the Climate Smart Communities Certification Process by collaborating with local and regional partners, working with a supportive state government partner, and embracing a collective impact approach in order to transform our Village and position this community to prosper far into the future. This robust position is pushing the policy change of today and positively impacting our next generation of planning and investment. This Committee's impact stems from the collaborative effort of the state and federal government, local organizations, and regional planning entities to ensure that these policies and projects transform our village and inspire new investment opportunities.

How Can You Get Involved?

The Sustainability Committee is nothing without the participation of the residents of Montour Falls. Want to know how you can help the Village meet its sustainability goals? Whether you want to lower your energy bills, switch to renewable sources, or curb your GHG emissions, check out these links! And be sure to stop back, as we will update this section regularly with new information and new ways to get involved.
Smart Energy Choices
smartenergychoices.org
This site contains a wide range of resources for addressing your home energy usage. On this site you will find resources for performing a free Energy Audit (up to a $800 value!), switching your home energy to renewable sources, and upgrading your heating and cooling system efficiency.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County
Our friends at CCE Schuyler have many resources and community educators dedicated to topics as broad as forestry, composting, solar installation, and invasive species. Check them out below!

Energy
This section has resources on how to connect your farm or house to solar energy, energy saving and cost reducing upgrades you can make to your home, as well as connections to other resources to help heat, cool, and power your home efficiently.

Environment
Here you will find resources related to agriculture, horticulture, forest management, and soil quality. Check out CCE's resources on recycling, composting, water quality, and more!
Other Steps You Can Take
In addition to some of the resources found above, there are some simple steps that everyone can take in order to reduce energy use and GHG emissions. Here are some of our favorites:

Green Your Commute by walking, biking, or carpooling to work rather than driving by yourself. Reducing the amount you drive reduces your emissions, and saving on gas will help your wallet too!

Upcycle your old or unwanted materials into something usable rather than buying new. This fun crafting opportunity can also save you money on new materials. The Montour Falls Library hosts an Upcycle program every Saturday!

Buy Local at some of these fine retailers to reduce lifetime emissions from some of your favorite products. Fewer goods on trucks means fewer tons of CO2. This is also a great way to support your friends and neighbors here in the Village!
