The workshops will be held before the regular scheduled Board Meetings in the board room of the Village Hall, 408 West Main Street, Montour Falls, NY.
Cold Weather Tips
With the temperatures dropping outside, homeowners should take measures inside to keep your pipes warm and water running. Frozen pipes generally occur below 20° F, but freezing can happen above that threshold as well, especially if you have uninsulated pipes running through an uninsulated space.
Some of the steps experts recommend:
--Open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing
--Allow the cold water to drip from a faucet if pipes are exposed. Running water through the pipe helps prevent pipes from freezing.
--Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and at night. During a cold snap it is not recommended if you have pipes that are at risk of freezing.
--Leave the heat on if you plan to be away during cold weather. Set the thermostat to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
--Insulate pipes. Pipe insulation can cost just a few dollars at your local hardware store.
--For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows and doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

Curbside Recycling
Scheduled for Tuesday, February 3rd. All boxes should be no larger than 2'x2' in size, items should be placed in a clearly marked container and placed at the curb the night before to ensure smooth pick up.

January 23rd, 2026- The bins will be ordered by Greenleaf Recycling by 1/30/26. They take 6-8 weeks to arrive. Residents will be notified by a message from the Code Red system when it will begin. Instructions on how to sign up will be posted once the sign-up system is in place.
January 5th, 2026- The State has approved the local law. The Sustainability Educator is contacting all landlords in the Village to confirm their decision. If you have not heard from her, please email the address above. Answers should be confirmed by January 16th, 2026. After that date, the final number of bins will be ordered (they typically take 6-8 weeks to arrive), and the program can begin.
November 21, 2025 - The Village held a public hearing on Thursday, November 20th, 2025 to hear public comments on local law #4-2025 establishing municipal refuse and recycling pickup service, the local law was passed and will be moved to the state for approval.
September 15th, 2025 - There is no set start date for the Recycling and Garbage program. However, it is projected to start early 2026. The State required the Village pass a local law before the program takes effect.
August 22nd, 2025 - At the Village Board meeting, the board approved the Recycling and Garbage program. The program will likely take a few months before it will begin, needing to finalize more details. If you have not yet notified the Village of your container preference, please reach out.

Montour Falls Grants: Today, on behalf of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Climate Smart Grant Committee, Mayor Ryan signed an agreement with the Falls Motel owner Vyomesh Patel toward their project of purchasing and installing new energy-efficient air conditioners/heaters for half of the motel rooms, thus replacing 30-year-old inefficient units. The cost share grant will cover $10,000 of expected expenses. |

Sustainable Montour Falls:
Kids Recycling Craft Group
The Sustainability Education Coordinator will be hosting a recycling craft group for children aged 5-16 held at the Montour Falls Library. They will be on the 4th Saturdays of the month and kids can drop in anytime between 11am-1pm. Kids will be required to bring their own recyclable item for the designated craft and all other supplies will be provided! A full schedule of craft dates and the items that will need to be brought can be found under the 'News and Events' section of the 'Sustainability' tab at the top of the page.

The Village of Montour Falls has partnered with the renewable energy company Nexamp to bring solar power to residents without the need for roof panel installation. By enrolling, residents can save a guaranteed 10% on their electricity bill while still going through their current utility provider. A Clean Energy Intern will be at the weekly Farmers Market every Thursday to answer any question!
